Pompoko [Movie still]

An animated film from Studio Ghibli about tanukis (a raccoon-like animal, which in Japanese mythology are believed to be able to shapeshift into any form) in a man-against-nature setting. Humans are expanding their city and thereby destroying the habitat of the tanuki. The ecological problem unfolds in an imaginative, funny, and moving way whilst undeniably referencing Japanese folklore. The animation is amazingly detailed and the sound is so top-notch, you might forget this movie is over ten years old.
