Shohei Imamura dies at the age of 79

Shohei Imamura on set

"I am interested in the relationship of the lower part of the human body and the lower part of the social structure on which the reality of daily Japanese life obstinately supports itself." "The Japanese did not change as a result of the Pacific War — they haven't changed in thousands of years! "

— Shohei Imamura

Renowned Japanese film virtuoso Shohei Imamura died of cancer on May 30th at 15.49.

He is most known as the two-time Palme d’or winner at Cannes ("Ballad of Narayama" - Narayama Bushiko: 1983, "Eel" - Unagi: 1997)

Shohei Imamura's films dig beneath the surface of Japanese society to reveal a wellspring of sensual, often irrational, energy that lies beneath. Along with his friends, Imamura began his serious directorial career as a member of the New Wave movement in Japan. Imamura moved away from the subtlety and understated nature of the classical masters to a celebration of the primitive and spontaneous aspects of Japanese life. To explore this level of Japanese consciousness, Imamura focuses on the lower classes, with characters who range from bovine housewives to shamans, and from producers of blue movies to troupes of third-rate travelling actors. He has proven himself unafraid to explore themes usually considered taboo, particularly those of incest and superstition.

Coincidentally, his award winning film "Eel" (Unagi) will be screened at Lantaren-Venster as part of "Japanse Klassiekers" following CAMERA JAPAN. (Sun 25.06 / 14:30; Mon 26.06, Tue 27.06, Wed 28.06 / 19:30)

So we will have the chance to pay a tribute to his master work.
