De aan grootheidswaanzin lijdende Kitagawa en de ambitieuze Saito willen regisseur worden. Zij begint haar carrière met een trashy rol als 'strawberry' terwijl hij zijn eerste ervaringen in de pornowereld opdoet. Opeen dag besluiten ze hun krachten te bundelen en samen een film te maken die moet zorgen voor hun doorbraak. Echter, het gaat niet helemaal zoals ze gepland hadden. Een hilarische parodie die een indruk geeft van de onafhankelijke filmscene in Japan. Barstensvol met 'in-jokes' zonder aan toegankelijkheid in te boeten.

Egomaniac Kitagawa and the ambitious Saito are struggling to become movie directors. After respectively managing to gain a certain success, Kitagawa in pornography and Saito in low budget indie films, they one day decide to make a last shot at a breakthrough movie together. However, the shoot does not go well....
THE WAY OF THE DIRECTOR is a hilarious, parody of the independent filmmaking scene in Japan. Stuffed with in-jokes yet highly accessible, it is at once typical of indie filmmaking and yet a razor sharp indictment of it.

MATSUNASHI Tomoko Born 1971 in Hiroshima and shot many 8mm-films before switching to digital video in the late 1990's. She is one of the celebrities of the so-called 'jishu-film' scene, where films are self-financed by their directors. She received the Directors' Guild newcomer award in 1998.
