In de jaren dertig besluit de hoofdpersoon, nog een jonge knul, een filmrol te begraven omdat hij het niet eens is met het einde ervan. De betreffende film gaat over een liefde tussen twee mensen die helaas voorkomen wordt door een derde. In het heden wordt de jongen, inmiddels een oude man, geplaagd door de herinnering aan de filmrol. Zijn zoektocht helpt zijn kleindochter (gespeeld door de actrice uit de stomme film) haar eigen problemen op te lossen. Een hommage aan de stomme films van de jaren 30.
A tranquil and beautiful homage to the silent movies of the thirties, 'Clouds of Yesterday' tells the story of an old man haunted by his past. As a young boy, our protagonist discovers a film that upsets him and he decides to bury it. Now, decades after the event, the old man is still disturbed by the images he saw and becomes determined to find the old film. His search causes his granddaughter to go on her own journey and resolve her buried issues. It is a story about love that has been made impossible through the actions of a third party. Completed after nine years, independently and without a production company, 'Clouds of Yesterday' has been a triumph receiving various prizes at many International film festivals and attracting the attention of movie-goers overseas.

Regisseur MOTOKI Takashi woonde in Osaka ten tijde van de grote Hanshin aardbeving die met een kracht van 7,3 op de schaal van Richter Kobe teisterde en meer dan 6.000 slachtoffers eiste. Uitgenodigd door een vriend gaat hij tien jaar na de ramp terug naar zijn geboorteplaats om te filmen hoe de bewoners omgaan met de nasleep daarvan. In het hedendaagse Kobe ziet hij overlevenden vooruit kijken naar het tijdstip wanneer ze eindelijk weer hun oude werkplek weer in kunnen nemen, terwijl hij, die ten tijde van de ramp veilig op een andere plaats zat, probeert om te gaan met het verleden.
Director MOTOKI Takashi was living in Osaka when in 1995 the huge Hanshin earthquake hit Kobe with a force of 7.3 on the Richter scale, killing more than 6,000 people. Ten years later, and invited by an old friend, he returns to his hometown to film how people are coping with the aftermath. In present day Kobe, he finds survivors looking forward to finally being re-settled, whilst he, who was not there at the time of the earthquake, is fighting his own personal battle, of how to deal with the past.

Twenty-four year old Isamu has just graduated from university and is living in the countryside, working as a candle artist, not knowing what to do with his life. Rainbow Song is a beautiful, yet tragic love story about a romance that never happened. Two young film students, Tomoya and Aoi, become fast friends after being put on a project together. Quickly, Tomoya becomes enamoured with the young girl but is too afraid to tell her his true feelings. After graduation, Tomoya continues living in Japan working on a film set and Aoi leaves to work in America. The movie takes a turn as Tomoya finds out that Aoi never made it to her destination because of a plane crash. He then starts to become consumed with his thoughts, day-dreaming about the love affair that never was nor can be.

De jonge Miroku wil ontsnappen uit zijn saaie leven. Hij doet hiervoor zijn best door videogames te spelen tot hij kans krijgt om aan een levensecht spel mee te doen. Via een advertentie voor een geheimzinnige website doet hij auditie voor een spel waarin veel te winnen is. Dat hij ook een hoop te verliezen heeft, realiseert hij zich nog niet. Vervolgens bereikt de film zijn surrealistische hoogtepunt en worden er allerlei excentrieke personages geïntroduceerd. Een vergelijking met 'Alice in Wonderland' is niet misplaatst. Een film die je aan het denken zet, wat betreft het plot en de sociaal-politieke boodschap. Een opvallend debuut.
The lines between fantasy and reality start to blur in TORICO's 'Wicked Flowers' as the main character, the young slacker Miroku, immerses himself into video games in an attempt to escape his boring and uneventful life. When he comes across an advert for a mysterious website that invites players to audition for an even more mysterious game, he unknowingly signs up for an adventure where each prize comes with its own specific consequences. This however is only the first turn into a surrealistic film, whose eccentric characters would not look out of place in Alice in Wonderland'. Wicked Flowers' plot and socio-political message are certainly as thought provoking as its unique visuals. An exciting debut.

Het leven van de tiener Tamako wordt compleet op zijn kop gezet wanneer haar opa Kenzo naar zijn familie terugkeert na een verblijf van 13 jaar in de gevangenis voor een moord die hij gepleegd had toen zij geboren werd. Het duurt niet lang voordat er over haar grootvader geruchten de ronde doen en hij betrokken raakt bij incidenten rond pesten op Tamako's school. Al rap komen de twee dichter bij elkaar maar Kenzo wordt snel weer herinnerd aan zijn verleden wanneer de baas van de lokale yakuza bende opduikt.
Life radically changes for teenage Tamako when her grandfather Kenzo returns to his family after spending 13 years in prison for a murder he committed when she was born. It doesn't take long before the old man becomes the talk of the town and gets involved in bullying events surrounding Tamako's high school. Slowly the two of them start bonding, but when the boss of the local yakuza mob shows up, Kenzo´s past catches up on him.

Satoshi is ogenschijnlijk een gewone kantoormedewerker and heel serieus maar in werkelijkheid is hij een geobsedeerde porno verzamelaar. Middelbare school scholier Nao zwerft liever met haar vriendin Mami door de stad in plaats van naar les te gaan. De werkloze Sayuri is erg mooi maar ook erg chaotisch. Haar broer Kou wordt continue geplaagd door zijn klasgenoten en verkoopt magic mushrooms die hij verbouwt in zijn kamer. Deze vier mensen die ogenschijnlijk geen enkele gezamenlijke interesses hebben belanden op een of andere manier in een zeer ingewikkelde relatie.
Love Kill Kill reveals all of the secrets that make this seemingly ordinary cast of characters not so ordinary. Satoshi disguises himself as a steadfast office worker, while avidly collecting porn. High school student Nao prefers to wander over town with her friend Mami instead of going to school. Unemployed Sayuri is very beautiful but also extremely unorganized. Her brother Kou gets teased by his classmates, yet sells magic mushrooms which he grows in his own room. These people with apparently no common interests somehow end up in a very complicated relationship.

Na 10 jaar in een tuchthuis te hebben gezeten voor de moord op zijn moeder die hij pleegde toen hij 15 jaar was krijgt Munakata een baan in een zeer kleine fabriek in een afgelegen industriegebied in Kawasaki. In plaats van vrijheid voelt hij zich ook daar gevangen en de mensen in zijn omgeving kunnen of willen niets doen om daar verandering in te brengen. Regisseur OKU weet de menselijke, morele en religieuze schuldgevoelens, die bij de hoofdpersoon en alle mensen in zijn directe omgeving een grote rol spelen, subliem te verbeelden.
When Munakata is released from a 10 year prison sentence for murdering his mother when he was 15, he quickly finds out that some prisons need no walls. After getting a job in a small electronic factory in a distant industrial area of Kawasaki, his feelings of isolation are only heightened only by the social interactions he has with the people in the outside world. In this struggle, director OKU manages masterly to display the human, moral, and religious feelings of guilt that torment the main character as well as everyone around him.

Deze filmhit uit Japan is een hartverwarmende komedie over een aantal mijnwerkersdochters die hun kans grijpen om uit hun monotone leven te ontsnappen.
Een aantal inwoners van een klein bergdorpje uit Japan besluit het dorp te redden van een werkeloosheidscrisis door een Hawaï Ressort te bouwen, compleet met palmbomen en hula-danseressen. De rest van het traditioneel denkende dorp is totaal tegen het idee, vooral omdat zij geloven dat vrouwen thuis de mannen moeten verzorgen in plaats van het showen van hun navel aan publiek. Last year's blockbuster from Japan is a heart-warming comedy about a group of mineworkers' daughters who want to grab the chance to get out of the drab life that they're living. Some people of a small mountain village want to save their hometown of the looming possibility of unemployment by building a Hawaiian Resort, including palm trees and hula-dancers. The rest of the traditionally minded village opposes the idea, thinking women should be tending to the needs of men, instead of showing their bellybuttons to the public. Based on a true story, director LEE Sang-il created a movie in which there is enough to laugh about, but also where no tears need to be spared.

LEE Sang-il made immediately a big impact with his debut film 'Blue Chong' that won the Grand Prize at the PIA film festival which deals, like 'Borderline', with the problems Korean residents in Japan encounter on a daily basis. After that, he went on to make more mainstream movies such as '69' which screened at IFFR in 2005.

'Yokohama Mary' vertelt het verhaal over een Japanse prostituee die beroemd is geworden vanwege de diensten die zij verleende aan Amerikaanse soldaten vlak na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In de jaren negentig is ze veranderd in een excentrieke vrouw, die zichzelf wit schminkt, alsof ze een Kabuki-artieste is. Echter in 1995 verdwijnt ze plots, zonder enig spoor achter te laten. NAKAMURA Takayuki maakte een intrigerend portret over Mary en haar geboorteplaats, dat uitmondt in een speurtocht naar zowel het verleden als naar wat er nu van haar geworden is. Oude mythes over Mary worden uitgezocht, totdat NAKAMURA een definitief antwoord krijgt over haar lot.
'Yokohama Mary' tells the story about a Japanese prostitute who was famous for servicing American Soldiers in the period after the second World War. In the nineties she changed into an eccentric woman, who painted her face white like a Kabuki artist, roaming the streets of Yokohama, but in 1995 she suddenly disappeared without leaving any trace. NAKAMURA Takayuki creates an intriguing portrait about Mary and her hometown by piecing together her past in a quest to find her in the present. Old myths about Mary are being examined, until NAKAMURA gets a definite answer about her fate.

30 year old NAKAMURA Takayuki, who was born and raised in Yokohama himself, spent five years of research and filming on his debut feature. He started his career in 1997 as an assistant stage director, studied at the Beijing Film Academy and was the assistant director for the documentary 'Dream Cuisine'.

Het leven kan zowel fantastisch als verschrikkelijk zijn in Treasure Town, waar de maan glimlacht en jongens kunnen vliegen. Dit geldt ook voor de twee wezen Kuro (zwart) en Shiro (wit) die de buurt terroriseren. Deze jongens zijn tegenpolen van elkaar, Kuro is het gewiekste schoffie die voor alles staat wat slecht is in de stad, terwijl Shiro een onschuldige sufferd en dromer is. Samen zijn ze onverslaanbaar wanneer ze het gevecht aangaan met kleine criminelen, religieuze fanatici en gemene yakuza. Maar wanneer een onderneming genaamd 'Kiddy Kastle' Treasure Town wil afbreken om daar iets anders voor in de plaats te zetten, komen de jongens in actie om hun stad te redden.
In Treasure Town, where the moon smiles and young boys can fly, life can be both wonderful and terrible. Never more true for the two orphans Kuro (black) and Shiro (white) who rule the mean streets through violence and terror. These lost boys are direct opposites: Kuro being a streetwise punk who embodies everything wrong about the city, while Shiro is an innocent dope, out of touch with the world around him. Together, they're unstoppable as they take on petty thugs, religious fanatics and brutal yakuza. But when a corporation called "Kiddy Kastle" tries to tear down and rebuild Treasure Town to fit its own goals, the boys must save the soul of their beloved city.

'Ik wil een stad creëren.' Dit was het doel van Yoshimoto NARA tijdens zijn eerste samenwerking als artiest met 'graf', een creatieve groep uit Osaka. Hun droom werd waarheid in een exhibitie genaamd 'A to Z'. IN deze fascinerende documentaire volgt regisseur TOKUYAMA Ryuichi NARA op de voet tijdens zijn 420 daagse reis, st4eden bezoekend als Seoul, Yokohama, New York, Osaka, Londen en Bangkok. In de zomer van 2006, als hoogtepunt van zijn lange project, is er een fictieve stad gecreëerd in een oud warenhuis in NARA's geboortestad Hirosaki. What was generated when the 'solo' performer Yoshimoto Nara committed to 'collaborative' work for the first time?
'We want to create a town', Yoshitomo Nara and creative unit 'graf' shared this dream. Their dream finally came true by way of the exhibition, 'A to Z', making the end of their journey. Seoul, Yokohama, New York, Osaka, London, Bankok, etc. A camera traced their journey over 420 days, running through various countries. What did he discover when he developed friendships with boys and girls in each country through his works and give-and take of courage with each other?
In the summer of 2006, a fictitious town was created in the old brick warehouse in Nara's hometown, Hirosaki. This is the first complete feature documentary of Yoshitomo Nara.
