S/N was FURUHASHI's laatste optreden.
S/N is a documentary of the performances done by DUMB TYPE, Japan's most controversial collective of artists. Lead by FURUHASHI Teiji, S/N was the last performance piece before his death from AIDS in 1995. The work juxtaposed music, dance, talk show and video imageries, without resorting to an exotic Japonism. S/N not only contains excellent performances, but sheds light on the issues surrounding homosexuality, HIV/AIDS, and racial discrimination through the HIV epidemic. Initiation of such work in Japan, where homosexuality is constantly ignored despite its modern high-tech society, is courageous and innovative. And that is what makes this documentary very special and worthy of attention.

Founded in 1984, the artist collective DUMB TYPE is based in Kyoto, Japan. Members are trained in varied disciplines, including visual arts, architecture, music composition and computer programming. Their work ranges across such diverse media as art exhibitions, performances, audiovisuals and publications. DUMB TYPE is known for portraying a dark, cynical, and humorous world in which technology is a way of life--if not necessarily a welcome one. While based in Kyoto, Japan's ancient capital, DUMB TYPE is oriented more to the global than the local, the contemporary over the traditional. Notable in a country plagued by political apathy, the group has played the unpopular role of AIDS activist, organizing symposiums and other events, motivated in part by the fact that Furuhashi died of AIDS in 1995.

In the late sixties, a whole generation of Japanese students were swept into the dream of a new society. Some waited expectantly for the tide of worldwide revolution to reach Japan, while others instigated riots and bombings.
Taking place at the end of an era of hope, BOY'S CHOIR is the story of two young men striving for confidence in a world no longer given to dreams of a better future. Set in an all boy's militaristic orphanage, BOY'S CHOIR never turns explicitly gay, yet slowly and beautifully unfolds the friendship between the androgynous Yasuo and the stuttering, socially-inept Michio in their puberty with a homoerotic undercurrent.

Man en Man.
Man and Man. Woman and Woman. A Mystery of Yuda.
Yuda is gone. But the mystery of his disappearance remains...
While shooting a documentary video, I saw a guy named YUDA in the middle of Tokyo. I was curious about YUDA and begun following him around, but one day he disappeared with my video camera. A couple months later, a lady named Michi Nakamura came to my office. She had the strap of my video camera that YUDA stole from me, and said she saw the address that was on the strap, so she came here. I asked her about YUDA, and she told me that he was dead. Right after she left my office, she was hit by a car, I visited her in hospital and she begins to tell me about the mysterious story of her and Yuda.
