Volgens de schrijver Hasegawa horen romans zo hard en echt te zijn als het leven zelf. Negen jaar geleden vermoordde een man midden in de stad negen voorbijgangers. Om deze gebeurtenis te kunnen begrijpen bedenkt Hasegawa een personage: Harumi, de jongere broer van de moordenaar. Door in de huid van Harumi te kruipen hoopt Hasegawa puur en echt over de moord te kunnen schrijven. Door de bedrieglijke kalmte van de filmbeelden schemert een ondertoon van geweld en angst. The novelist Hasegawa thinks his books should be as harsh and as real to life as possible. Nine years ago, a man killed nine innocent passers-by in the town square. To make sense of what happened that day, Hasegawa invents a fictitious character: the murderer's younger brother Harumi. Harumi feels tainted, after all he and his brother share the same blood. The quietude of the movie only just covers the extreme violence present underneath. Because at some point the paths of Hasegawa and his invention are bound to cross.

Sakiko is een tiener die een gezonde hekel heeft aan haar gescheiden vader Yujiro. Yujiro krijgt echter al snel het idee om een koffiehuis te beginnen, waarbij hij uiteraard de hulp van Sakiko nodig heeft. Dit café wordt nu de tweede huiskamer van vader en dochter en zij vechten daar hun geschillen uit. Excentrieke bezoekers, vreemde of aantrekkelijke serveersters worden het onderwerp van gesprek en zorgen voor nieuwe spanningen tussen vader en dochter.
Sakiko is a typical teenager in many ways. She hates her divorced father, who chases after every skirt he sees. She does not know, if she will ever be loved by the other sex. When her dad suddenly inherits a lot of money and becomes really lazy, she hates him even more. He finally decides to start his own cafe, where Sakiko, of course has to help. From this moment, strange customers and good-looking waitresses form the center of tension between father and daughter. A feel good movie with an edge, that leaves you with a bittersweet after taste.

Shiina laat zijn schoenmakersfamilie achter om te gaan studeren in Sendai. Direct na aankomst ontmoet hij zijn buurjongen, die zichzelf voorstelt als Kawasaki. De angstige en veel te beleefde Shiina vindt het in het begin moeilijk om om te gaan met deze vlotte, oudere student, die hij geen ‘meneer’ mag noemen. Kawasaki stelt voor een boekenwinkel te beroven om hun gezamenlijke Bhutaanse buurjongen een woordenboek cadeau te kunnen doen zodat hij Japans kan leren. Vanaf dat moment is niet de nieuwe studie van Shiina zijn grootste bezigheid, maar de wereld van Kawasaki, waarin Bob Dylan, het lot van gemartelde huisdieren en dat van buitenlandse studenten in Japan samenkomen.
Shiina leaves his sheltered home of a shoemaker’s family in Tokyo to gain some independence and become a proper student in Sendai. Soon after meeting his mysterious new neighbor Kawasaki there is no turning back for him anymore. From this moment on, the new study won’t be the most important thing on his mind. Satoru belongs to the growing group of NEETs (‘not engaged in employment, education or training’). Hardly leaving his room in his mother’s house and without any real contact to the outside world, he lives a secluded life. When his mother’s friend Tosawa tries to help him to break out of his inner prison, things do not get any easier for Satoru. In his debut film, director CHIKUMA illuminates one of Japan’s rising social taboos, allowing us insight into the psyche of an adolescent with neither any perspective nor motivation.

CAMERA JAPAN is trots een “Best Of” selectie van hun 2008 editie te mogen vertonen. Het programma bestaat uit werk van zowel nieuw en aankomend talent als werk van meer gevestigde regisseurs. Als Shigeki een telescoop koopt ontdekt hij in een groot huis verderop een meisje van zijn leeftijd achter een raam. Hij is door haar gefascineerd en blijft haar bekijken ook als hij allang volwassen is. Zijn leven speelt zich af rond de momenten dat hij naar haar kan kijken en er is niemand die hier verandering in kan brengen. Is Shigeki een zielige voyeur, of getuigt zijn gedrag van een echte liefde? Doet hij de vrouw die hij iedere dag weer bekijkt kwaad of niet? Deze film brengt op verrassende wijze de ongewone relatie tussen twee mensen in beeld die elkaar op afstand leren kennen.
At a young age Shigeki buys a telescope and discovers a girl living at the other side of town. From this moment on he is fixated on her and his whole life is centered on the moments he is able to watch this woman. Is Shigeki someone we should feel sorry for? Is he just a strange and dirty voyeur or is his obsession a sign of real love? Does he offend the girl by watching her every day? Director YOKOI slowly unfolds in an intriguing and gentle way the unconventional relationship between two people who met each other at great distance.

Dit jaar tijdens CAMERA JAPAN zijn er maar liefst twee films te bewonderen van NEGISHI Kichitaro (de andere is dog in a sidecar, pag. …). Manabu (gespeeld door populaire acteur en Prada model ISEYA Yusuke) keert platzak terug naar de paardenranch van zijn broer Takeo in het met sneeuw bedekte noordelijke eiland van Japan, Hokkaido. Eerder had hij het harde leven op de paardenranch verruild voor een glamoureuze carrière in Tokyo maar vele jaren later keert berooid terug. Een aangrijpend familiedrama met op de achtergrond de adembenemende landschappen van noordelijk Japan. Won de Grand Prix tijdens het Tokyo International Filmfestival in 2005.
The second film by NEGISHI Kichitaro in this year’s edition of CAMERA JAPAN (see also Dog in a Sidecar, page..). Set in the snowy landscape of northern Hokkaido, the story of Manabu (played by popular actor and Prada model ISEYA Yusuke) is told. Once leaving the hard labor of the family business for a glamorous career in Tokyo, he now returns home with nothing left. NEGISHI masterly manages to combine the elements of a gripping family drama with the breathtaking landscape of Northern Japan. An achievement that amongst others won him the Grand Prix at the Tokyo International Film festival in 2006.

De schrijver NAKAHARA bezoekt een vrije school in een kleine stad voor zijn onderzoek naar kinderen met een sociale handicap. Daar ontmoet hij Emi, een vrijwilligster die zeer goed met de kinderen op school kan communiceren. De oorsprong van deze gave ligt in haar verleden en het verhaal gaat terug in de tijd naar het moment toen ze zelf een student met een handicap was. HIROKI Ryuichi is inmiddels uitgegroeid tot een van Japan’s meest internationaal bejubelde regisseurs. Wederom bewijst hij een meester in subtiliteit te zijn en vertelt hij een teder verhaal over vriendschap, verlies en de kunst van het fotograferen van wolken.
Reporter NAKAHARA visits a free school in a small city for his research on children with social deficiencies. There he meets Emi, a volunteer who is very gifted in communicating with the children. The origin of this ability lies in her past and the story travels back to the time of her own school days as a student with a handicap herself. HIROKI Ryuichi has become one of Japan’s internationally most acknowledged directors. Once again he proves himself a master of subtlety and tells us the gentle story of friendship, loss and the art of photographing clouds.
