Recentelijk worden er veel speelfilms en documentaires in Japan geproduceerd die gaan over de Tweede Wereldoorlog en waarvan veel zich richten op het leven van gewone mensen in die tijd. Is dit een teken dat veel Japanners nu gemakkelijker over hun (nationale) verleden praten, vinden velen dat er zaken rechtgezet dienen te worden, of is dit simpelweg een uitvloeisel van de huidige ‘nostalgie boom’ in Japan? Tijdens vier documentaires en een panel discussie, waaraan zowel regisseurs als deskundigen op het gebied van Japanse geschiedenis aan deelnemen, zal worden geprobeerd zoveel mogelijk antwoord te geven op deze vragen.
In recent years there have been many feature films and documentaries produced in Japan dealing with the Second World War, many of them focusing on people’s ordinary lives. Is this a sign that many Japanese are nowadays more comfortable to talk about their country’s past? Do people feel that certain wrongs need to be righted? Or is this simply due to the Japan’s current ‘nostalgia boom’? With four documentaries and a panel discussion, at which both directors and experts on Japanese history will participate, one can try to find answers to these questions.

Aan het eind van de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd een groep jonge studentes gemobiliseerd om te dienen als verpleegsters. De werden de Himeyuri gakutotai genoemd, ook bekend onder de Engelse naam “Lily corps”. Zij moesten zware taken aan het front, zoals het verplegen van soldaten, assisteren bij operaties en het ruimen van lichamen uitvoeren zonder rust of slaap om uiteindelijk aan het einde van de strijd aan hun lot te worden overgelaten.
Deze documentaire is een getuigenverslag van de overlevenden van het “Lily Corps”. De film vertelt uitvoerig over de mobilisatie voor de strijd, hun werk aan het front, en de periode nadat ze waren ontslagen.
Towards the end of the Second World War, the Japanese military mobilized many civilians including a group of 222 young female students as nurses and had them dispatched immediately to the front. These girls were called Himeyuri gakutotai (“Lily corps”), and had to carry out various duties under fire at the frontline without sleep or rest. At the very final stage of the battle they were set free to entirely fend for themselves. This documentary serves as a testimony of the surviving twenty-two female members of the "Lily corps" and recounts the stories of the girls of their mobilization before the battle, their front line activities, and the period after being released from duty.

15 augustus 1945 markeerde het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog, niet alleen voor de Japanners , maar ook voor alle andere betrokkenen. Tot die laatste groep behoren ook degenen die in het toenmalig Nederlands Indië leefden. Veel Nederlanders waren na de Japanse inval al gauw terecht gekomen in interneringskampen en vinden dat hun lijden nu genegeerd wordt.
Regisseurs Kees HIN en Peter SLORS trokken naar Japan en door Nederland om met zowel jonge als oude Japanners en Nederlanders te praten over hun herinneringen en meningen over de oorlog in het voormalig Nederlands Indië.
15 August 1945 marked the end of the Second World War, not just for the Japanese but for all involved. This includes those who were living in what is now Indonesia but was then a Dutch colony called the Dutch East Indies. Many Dutch people who were in Japanese internment camps during the war feel that their suffering is being ignored and some still suffer from traumas until to this day. Directors Kees HIN and Peter SLORS talked to young and old people in Japan and in the Netherlands about their views and thoughts about the war and how painful memories can affect someone’s worldview.

Kees HIN was born on 9 December 1936 in Amsterdam. After aborting his psychology study he decided to change his career to filmmaking and has directed and/or produced more than 95 documentary and feature films.
Peter SLORS was born in 1939 in what was then called the Dutch East Indies. Soon after the invasion by Japan, he and his family spend several years in internment camps until the end of the war.

Beďnvloed door de Japanse oorlogspropaganda, vertrok de destijds 18 jarige KURIHARA Sadako in 1944 naar Mantsjoerije waar verwacht werd dat de Japanse invloed versterkt zou worden door Japanners zich er te laten vestigen. Na afloop van de oorlog was het voor haar onmogelijk om terug te keren, maar ze vond gelukkig een Chinese man die met haar wilde trouwen waardoor ze aan vervolging kon ontkomen. Na 35 jaar in armoede in China gewoond te hebben, keert ze terug naar Japan met haar kinderen, die net als zij in China hard tegen discriminatie en vooroordelen moeten vechten.
1944, influenced by the Japanese war propaganda machine, 18 year old KURIHARA Sadako, moved in 1944 to Manchuria to strengthen the Japanese presence in the area. Unable to return to Japan after the end of WWII, she was lucky to find a Chinese man willing to marry her and thus save her from persecution. After living for 35 years in China enduring poverty and discrimination, she returns to Japan. In this film she reflects on the war and the circumstances leading to her departure to Manchuria and her return to Japan many years later.

De Amerikaanse filmmaakster Risa Morimoto gaat op zoek naar haar Japanse familie en in het bijzonder naar het verhaal achter haar oom, die in de Tweede Wereldoorlog opgeleid werd tot kamikazepiloot. Door op zoek te gaan naar mannen die net als haar oom opgeroepen werden om piloot te worden, zich vrijwillig opgaven en zelfs op het vliegtuig gestapt zijn met als doel zichzelf te pletter te vliegen, hoopt ze het beeld van de kamikazepiloten dat ze in Amerika op school gekregen heeft te nuanceren.
American-Japanese filmmaker MORIMOTO Risa visits her family in Japan to find out the story of her uncle, who was a pilot in the Second World War and trained to be on a Kamikaze mission. She also visits other pilots and even men who aborted their suicidal mission in the last minutes and chose to return home. In this way, MORIMOTO tries to get a better idea of Japanese society during the war in general and the Kamikaze pilots in particular, which is totally different than she learned in the American schools.
