Japans ‘tegencultuur ‘ van de jaren zestig mag dan klein lijken in vergelijking met die van Amerika en Europa, er is toch heel wat sterk en omstreden werk vertoond, vooral op gebied van theater en film. Naast OSHIMA Nagisa en MATSUMOTO Toshio is de bekendste ‘iconoclast’ van deze generatie TERAYAMA Shuji, die al bekend was met zijn boeken en gedichten en in de jaren zestig met zijn theatergroep films ging maken. Deze lezing zal het werk en de invloed van TERAYAMA behandelen aan de hand van filmfragmenten en laten zien wat voor invloed hij heeft gehad op Japans onafhankelijke filmmakers van vandaag.
Tony RAYNS woont in Londen en maakt films, is filmcriticus en festivalprogrammeur met als specialiteit Oost-Aziatische films. Hij werkt voor de filmfestivals van Londen, Vancouver en Rotterdam. RAYNS heeft nu bekende regisseurs als KITANO Takeshi, MIIKE Takashi en NAGASAKI Shunichi geïntroduceerd in het Westen. Eind jaren zeventig speelde hij een gastrol in het theater van TERAYAMA Shuji en in 2004 werd hem de Kawakita Prijs toegekend voor zijn bijdrage aan de Japanse film.
Japan’s ‘counter-culture' of the 1960s may have been quite small by comparison with the explosions in America and Europe, but some remarkably powerful and scandalous work did get done – especially in theatre and film. Of the several pioneering figures, who included OSHIMA Nagisa and MATSUMOTO Toshio, the most iconoclastic was probably TERAYAMA Shuji, already famous as a poet and novelist, who ran the theatre-group Tenjo-Sajiki and began making ‘underground’ films with his actors in the late 1960s. This illustrated talk will evoke the impact that TERAYAMA’s work had at the time and trace its lasting impact on Japan’s non-commercial filmmakers today.
Tony RAYNS is a London-based film-maker, critic and festival programmer with a special interest in the film cultures of East Asia. He works with the London and Vancouver festivals, and has been associated with IFFR since Hubert BALS’ days. RAYNS played a part in introducing such directors as KITANO Takeshi, MIIKE Takashi and NAGASAKI Shunichi to western audiences. In the late 1970s, TERAYAMA Shuji invited him to be a guest actor with his theatre group Tenjo-Sajiki. In 2004, he was awarded the Kawakita Prize for his contributions to Japanese cinema.

Recentelijk worden er veel speelfilms en documentaires in Japan geproduceerd die gaan over de Tweede Wereldoorlog en waarvan veel zich richten op het leven van gewone mensen in die tijd. Is dit een teken dat veel Japanners nu gemakkelijker over hun (nationale) verleden praten, vinden velen dat er zaken rechtgezet dienen te worden, of is dit simpelweg een uitvloeisel van de huidige ‘nostalgie boom’ in Japan? Tijdens vier documentaires en een panel discussie, waaraan zowel regisseurs als deskundigen op het gebied van Japanse geschiedenis aan deelnemen, zal worden geprobeerd zoveel mogelijk antwoord te geven op deze vragen.
In recent years there have been many feature films and documentaries produced in Japan dealing with the Second World War, many of them focusing on people’s ordinary lives. Is this a sign that many Japanese are nowadays more comfortable to talk about their country’s past? Do people feel that certain wrongs need to be righted? Or is this simply due to the Japan’s current ‘nostalgia boom’? With four documentaries and a panel discussion, at which both directors and experts on Japanese history will participate, one can try to find answers to these questions.
