Denk je de Ramones in als ze door drie jonge meiden op het Japanse platteland opgericht zouden worden. Doe één deel Clash, één deel Runaways, en één deel Shangri La’s bij elkaar. Strooi daar een flinke dosis rockabilly over en maak het af met vrachtlading schattigheid en dan heb je Spookey. Met hun pakkende deuntjes en aanstekelijke enthousiasme weten ze een ruime schare fans aan zich te binden van punks tot indiepop liefhebbers. YAMASAKI Sanae komt uit Sapporo, in het Japanse noordelijke eiland Hokkaido. Het bekende koele klimaat en mooie landschappen van deze streek lijken in haar muziek terug te komen. Haar eerste album is opgenomen onder de naam MOSKITOO bij het 12k-label van Taylor DEUPREE en heeft haar veel lof opgeleverd. Haar prachtige stem doet denken aan haar collega PIANA. De muziek van MOSKITOO is experimenteel en de composities hebben een vervoerende uitwerking op de luisteraar, maar dit alles wordt bij elkaar gehouden door YAMASAKI’s intrigerende zang.
Hailing from Sapporo in Northern Japan, YAMASAKI Sanae’s compositions reflect the cool climate and gorgeous scenery of this place. Her acclaimed debut album as MOSKITOO on Taylor DEUPREE´s 12k-label provides a cascade of icy synthesized sound, accompanied eventually by YAMASAKI's unique voice, not unsimilar to fellow Japanese electronic lady PIANA. The experimental, almost musique concrete elements of her compositions are held together by a beautifully naïve and innocent sense for melody, letting the songs drift at times into pop and sugared hazy bliss. Endearingly strange and haunting.

SUGIMOTO Keiichi speelt bij de elektro-improv formatie MINAMO en is het brein achter het electronica project FONICA. Onder de naam FOURCOLOR is de gitaar het startpunten. Zijn vroege werk bij Apestartje-records laten een experimenteel gitaargeluid horen, Ruime on/off pulses, high-tension gitaar plucks en bassy droplets. Voor zijn latere werk bij het 12k-label heft SUGIMOTO een nieuwe richting gekozen, waarin zijn pop-kant naar voren komt. Stotterende vouwen van klaare gitaar stukken laaten denken aan Christopher WILLITS, terwijl fijngevoelige looping frasen Dan ABRAM's pop-ambient-ish werk oproepen. Gewicht- en tijdloze electroacoustische soundscapes.
FILFLA is het meest gecomponeerde project van SUGIMOTO (FOURCOLOR), met meer ritmische elementen en song-georiënteerde nummers dan zijn bekende minimalistische stijl. Het strakke en ijzige geluid van FILFLA hoort bij de productie, maar tegelijkertijd is de indruk erg organisch en melodisch. FILFLA doet daarmee denken aan de poprock/avantpop van FRIDGE, MINA en zelfs soms aan CORNELIUS. Vaak herhaalde accoordenschema’s, het geluid van geplukte snaren en onregelmatige drum-ritmes vormen het landschap van deze innovatieve popmuziek.
SUGIMOTO Keiichi, a member of electro-improv quartet MINAMO and mastermind behind the electronica project FONICA, creates guitar-based textures under his moniker FOURCOLOR. His early work on Apestartje-records continues the theme of guitar drone experimentalism: Spacious on/off pulses, high-tension guitar plucks and bassy droplets. On his latest works for the 12k-label a new direction was chosen, unfolding SUGIMOTO´s pop sensibilities. Stuttering folds of clear guitar bits bring to mind Christopher WILLITS, while delicate looping phrases evoke Dan ABRAM's pop-ambient-ish work. Weightless and timeless electroacoustic sound design.
FILFLA is SUGIMOTO´s most composed outfit, adding rhythmic elements to rather more song oriented arrangements than his trademark minimal style. Though elements of glitchy sound processing are part of the compositions, the overall impression is organic/melodic and brings to mind the works of avantpop/postrock-artists like Fridge, Mina or even Cornelius. Looped chords, plucked strings and shuffly broken beats form an innovative pop landscape.

Een album titel als ‘All in one Pot’ doet al het één en ander vermoeden: performer Shabushabu maakt zeer eigenzinnige en frivole muziek die een kruidige mix is van electronica, hiphop, J-pop en traditionele Japanse muziek. Shabushabu uit Kyoto mag in één adem genoemd worden met underground helden als Ove-naxx en Oorutaichi (met deze laatste musiceert Shabushabu als ‘Obakejaa’).
With an album title as ‘All in one Pot’, one might have certain expectations: performer Shabushabu produces very obstinate and frivolous sounds. A spicy mix of electronica, hiphop, J-pop and traditional Japanese music. Shabushabu from Kyoto plays for sure in the same league as underground heroes such as Ove-naxx and Oorutaichi (with whom Shabushabu collaborates under the name ‘Obakejaa’).
