All Around Us volgt een getrouwd stel, Shoko en Kanao, door de jaren heen. Waar hun relatie in de eerste jaren op losse schroeven staat, brengt een groot verlies hun via een weg van verdriet, depressie en acceptatie dichter bij elkaar. Tussen de huwelijksperikelen door zien we de meest geruchtmakende processen van Japan door de ogen van rechtbankschetser Kanao en hoe Shoko haar eigen kunstzinnigheid hervindt. HASHIGUCHI heeft hiermee een zeer menselijk werk afgeleverd over de afhankelijkheid van twee verbonden mensen en creëert zo een hele mooie tastbare realiteit.
'All Around Us' follows a young couple who are soberly aware of their dysfunctional relationship and discomfort in their workplaces. Shoko loves Kanao but is wallowing in self-pity and unable to realize his love for her. Kanao's new engaging job as a courtroom illustrator exposes him to Japan's most heinous criminals, distracting him from Shoko's deep depression. All changes when Shoko visits a psychiatrist and is slowly awakened from depression. HASHIGUCHI delivers a brilliantly subtle and gentle movie anchored around human sensitivities with a sharp eye for detail.

HASHIGUCHI Ryosuke (*1962, Nagasaki) is one of the few openly gay directors in Japan. His first film A Secret Evening won the grand prize at the PIA Film Festival. After a seven year hiatus he makes a comeback with All Around Us, his first film that does not feature any gay characters or themes.

Op het eerste gezicht ziet weinig er vrediger uit dan een Japans klaslokaal. Leerlingen zitten netjes in de rij, stil te luisteren naar de leraar. Maar onderhuids speelt er veel meer. De leraar Murauchi (ABE Hiroshi, o.a. Still Walking) moet een collega vervangen in een klas waar een jongen als gevolg van langdurig pesten een zelfmoordpoging gedaan heeft. De school claimt al het nodige gedaan te hebben en weer vooruit te kunnen kijken, maar daar denkt Murauchi anders over. In deze film stelt regisseur NAKANISHI een zeer groot probleem van Japan aan de orde, dat verder reikt dan de klaslokalen.
Nothing seems to be more peaceful than a Japanese classroom. Students sit behind their benches listening quietly to their teacher. But the currents run deep beneath the tranquil surface. Mr. Murauchi (ABE Hiroshi, a.o. 'Still Walking') is a substitute teacher in a class where a young boy had recently tried to commit suicide after being bullied extensively. The school authorities and parents feel they did everything in their power to prevent this, but Murauchi has different ideas about this. Director NAKANISHI portrays in his debut a very big problem of Japanese society, which goes beyond the classroom walls.

Doelloos rijdend door het Japanse platteland, probeert Hiroshi uit te vogelen wat hem naar deze verre uithoek brengt. Wanneer zijn lot dat van de zesjarige Keita kruist als de laatste per ongeluk in zijn auto stapt, wordt het voor Hiroshi nog lastiger om de gefragmenteerde flashbacks uit zijn schokkende verleden, die te pas en te onpas naar boven komen, te verwerken. De film laat een spannende ontknoping zien van een strijd tussen Hiroshi en zijn innerlijke boze geesten, maar laat tegelijkertijd ook mooi zien hoe een volwassen man en een klein kind elkaar in korte tijd leren kennen.
While aimlessly driving through Tochigi prefecture, Hiroshi meets 6 year old Keita when the boy accidentily gets into Hiroshi's car. This creates a domino effect of events in which the two lives start to intertwine. Hiroshi seems like a man with a very troubled past which seems to catch up with him while they drive through the night trying to get the little boy back to his mother.The fragmented flashbacks of his shocking past that keep haunting him do make things rather complicated.

Na haar film The Mourning Forest neemt KAWASE ons ook in Nanayo mee op een zoektocht te midden van overweldigende natuur. Although 'Osaka Hamlet' starts off in the same place as its Shakespearean counterpart, it pushes past the obvious themes and focuses on all aspects of the family dynamic. After the death of the patriarch, the remaining Kubo family members simultaneously start to break out of their shell. The youngest announces his desire to be a girl, the oldest begins to date a girl with strange demands, and the middle brother, after being taunted at school as a 'Hamlet', becomes obsessed with the play and its meaning. A heartwarming, bittersweet comedy with a Kansai twist.

A collection of three short films where the lead characters struggle to harmonise with Tokyo's society. The final film is an artistic insight into a man's isolated life and portrays his struggle to overcome confinement to enter the chaotic modern world in the pursuit of love. In Japan wordt nog steeds de doodstraf uitgevoerd. Vacation volgt de gevangenisbewaarder Hirai, die met zijn collega's naar de eerste executie in drie jaar toewerkt. Daarnaast zien we hoe hij op late leeftijd probeert zijn jonge huwelijk vorm te geven. Door het lage tempo van de film en KADOI's oog voor detail, krijgen we een zeer gedetailleerd beeld van het dagelijks leven in de gevangenis. Daardoor komt de kijker op een mooie manier zeer dicht bij de personages in de film te staan.
'Vacation' revolves around the prosecution and execution of the repentive inmate Kaneda and prison guard Hirai's start of a new life. Prison policy entitles the execution assistant to an extra week of vacation. Hirai volunteers for this unmentionable duty and is therefore fiercely judged by his colleagues. The mood is a solitary one and themes of life, death, remorse and joy are steadily covered. Complimented by a classical score 'Vacation' cleverly switches back and forth in time to create stark contrasts between happiness and remorse.

TOMOMATSU Naoyuki & NISHIMURA Yoshihiro TOMOMATSU was born in Osaka in 1967. He started making films and comic books when he was in high school. Works both as a scenario writer and a director. NISHIMURA (*1967) does, besides directing, special effects for a wide range of films. For his own films, he gets his inspiration from horror magazines and his own dreams.
