“No Music No Dream” is het levensmotto van plattelandsjongen Soichi. Het is zijn hartenwens om in Tokyo een trendy leven te hebben en dan vooral trendy popliedjes te maken. Maar het lot beslist anders en Soichi breekt door als Sir Johannes Krauser II, de satanische frontman van Death Metal band Detroit Metal City. Het contrast met zijn privé-leven kan niet groter zijn en stelt hem voor grote problemen, zeker als hij zijn grote liefde tegen het lijf loopt, die niets weet van zijn professionele carrière. Een hilarische film, een luchtige paradox van de bovenste plank. Met een geweldige gastrol van Gene SIMMONS (KISS).

'Detroit Metal City' is the bizarre and hilarious story about country boy Soichi who sees his own dreams of music passing him by. His heart's desire is to live in a trendy apartment in Tokyo, have trendy friends, but most of all make sweet and trendy pop songs. However life has a way of running its own course. He becomes famous as Sir Johannes Krauser II, lead singer of Death Metal band 'Detroit Metal City'. The divergence with his own character puts him into big troubles, especially when he runs into the love of his life who is unaware of his professional career.

LEE Toshio (*1964) studied at Nihon University where he majored in Literature. In 1999 he started Leeriders, a small production company that is mainly involved with planning of the production of television programs and films. This movie is based on the popular manga series Detroit Metal City by KIMINORI Wakasugi (2005).

Dat ook Japan de jaren '60 heeft meegemaakt laat HONDA in zijn zesde film in felle kleuren zien. Group Sounds (GS) bandjes deden het erg goed in Japan dankzij de Britse pop. Drie jongens willen niets liever dan beroemd zijn en worden door een platenmaatschappij ingezet om de hype op een aparte manier uit te dragen. Bij gebrek aan een vierde bandlid voegt de gelikte manager een meisje genaamd Mick toe die voor een jongen door moet gaan. Er volgt een bont spektakel over de band The Tightsmen in een grillige tijd waarin zij roem vergaren met alle rare gevolgen van dien.

Summer of '69, Japan – the Group Sounds (GS) movement is in full swing and 'The Tightsmen' have 50 hysterical female fans fainting at their feet and 20 peeing their pants. This hilarious comedy follows an unknown pop band's rollercoaster-ride to fame and fortune. Caught up in corporate absurdity, the record companies search for Japan's answer to 'The Beatles'. When a slick manager hears music blaring from the rooftops, he knows he's found his diamonds in the rough. A whirl of pop, funk and psychedelics create a parody to '60's Britpop with a fairytale rise to the top, but with one large secret...

HONDA Ryuichi (*1974) studied at Osaka University of Arts. During his time as a student he already was a huge fan of 1960s music and looking for a way to combine his hobby with his passion of making films.

Nadat aanstormend muziektalent Katsuo onverwacht terugkomt uit Tokyo, wil hij een nieuwe band bij elkaar brengen met zijn beste vriend Masuo. Met een schoolmeisje dat niet op haar mondje is gevallen op de drums en een gedesillusioneerde zakenman op de gitaar vormen ze een onwaarschijnlijk kwartet. Katsuo en zijn band bereiden zich voor op hun ultieme optreden tijdens het lokale zomerfestival, maar dan zorgt zijn vreemde gedrag voor problemen en loopt het niet helemaal zoals gepland.

After leaving to become a musician in Tokyo, Katsuo suddenly returns home where he wants to start a new band with his old time friend, Masuo, a cheeky schoolgirl of 14 who loves to cosplay and to bash on drums and an elite businessman on lead guitar, who has lost his hopes of a promotion at work. This unlikely bunch forms a band which Katsuo wants to perform at the local summer festival. However, Katsuo's strange behavior soon causes strain on the foursome and things don't go quite as planned.

SHIBATA Go (*1975, Yokohama), studied Imaging Art at Osaka University. In 2005 he received the Dream Digital Award at the Hawaii International Film Festival for his controversial film Late Bloomer, about a serial killer with a handicap which received wide acclaim at festivals worldwide. Music plays a big role in all of his films and Punch the Blue Sky is definitely not an exception.
