Vrachtwagenchauffeur Kaikura loopt elke dag aan tegen de effecten van de losse arbeidsregels die sinds 1990 ingevoerd zijn door de Japanse regering om de internationale concurrentiepositie van Japan te versterken. Hij werkt lange tijd onder zeer zware omstandigheden. Hij draait meer dan 550 uur per maand, kan niet aanspraak maken op sociale voorzieningen, geen vergoeding voor overwerk en ontvangt geen betaalde vakantiedagen. Maar dan komt de ogenschijnlijk timide man op voor zichzelf.
Truck driver Kaikura struggles daily with the affects of the loose labor regulations in Japan. Since 1990, the Japanese government has been relaxed in order to strengthen the competitiveness of Japan in the global market. After enduring extensive working hours, poor conditions, no social insurance, no overtime pay and no paid holidays, all for a meager salary, this seemingly weak willed man finally decides to stand up for his rights.

Deze documentaire is een observatie van de patiënten, werknemers, vrijwilligers, thuishulp en Dr. YAMAMOTO in zijn kliniek voor geestelijk zieken in Japan. In deze aangrijpende film probeert SODA het moeilijk doorzichtbare gordijn te lichten tussen de zieken en de maatschappij die ze afweert en ze negeert. Hij brengt in beeld hoe de overheid de zorg politiseert en hoe de patiënten tegen de sociale en eigen vooroordelen over hun groep vechten. De film doorbreekt een groot taboe door de persoonlijke verhalen van de geestelijk zieken te delen met de kijker, waarmee SODA een stem geeft aan de stemlozen.
A documentary that observes patients, staff, volunteers, home-helpers and Dr. YAMAMOTO at his outpatient mental health clinic in Japan. In this gripping film, SODA aims to lift the invisible curtain between the mentally ill in Japan and ”normal” society who shun them. It shows how complex the reality is for these people and their daily struggle with not only social prejudice, but their own prejudice toward themselves as a group. The film breaks a major taboo by sharing the personal stories of the mentally ill, by which SODA gives a voice to the voiceless.

SODA Kazuhiro Mental is the second in the series of observational films by SODA. The first, Campaign, was about the inner workings of the Liberal Democratic Party, the most dominant political party in Japan. Mental won the best documentary award at Pusan International Film Festival and the best documentary award at Dubai International Film Festival in 2008.

Jörg BUTTGEREIT Born in Berlin in 1963, BUTTGEREIT has lived his entire life there. Being an active part of the city's vibrant underground scene of the 80's, he is maybe best known for his controversial film Nekromantik, which was described by American filmmaker and trash icon John WATERS as the 'first erotic film for necrophiliacs'.

De hete hangijzers rondom Japan's oorlogsverleden, -herinnering en militarisme liggen ten grondslag aan Yasukuni. Afgelopen lente leidde het bezoek van premier ASO Taro (en voor hem KOIZUMI) aan deYasukuni schrijn, waar 2,5 miljoen Japanse oorlogsdoden herdacht worden - inclusief WO2 oorlogsmisdadigers, tot een internationale rel. Vooral door Aziatische buurlanden wordt dit gezien als een verheerlijking van het Japanse oorlogsverleden. Deze documentaire werd de meest succesvolle in Japan ooit en was onderwerp van een enorme controverse in Japan. Bioscopen ontvingen talloze bedreigingen en bommeldingen door yakuza en rechtsradicale groepen waardoor vele voorstellingen afgelast werden.
The hot-button issues of Japanese war remembrance and militarism are at the heart of 'Yasukuni'. As recently as spring 2008, Japan's Prime Minister ASO Taro (and before him P.M. KOIZUMI) created an international furor by visiting the notorious Yasukuni Shrine, paying respect to 2.5 million Japanese war veterans, including WWII 'Class A' war criminals. This was received by many Asian nations as political symbolism glorifying of Japan's war history. Yasukuni, Japan's highest grossing documentary, was subject to such controversy that the director, the producers as well as Japanese theatres received threats from yakuza and right wing radical groups, causing numerous screening cancellations and sending the director into hiding.
