WAKAMATSU Koji (*1947)Born in Miyagi prefecture, Wakamatsu is seen by many as the most important and influential director in the pink film genre. Many of his films carry strong political views and are often paired with power, abuse, and violence against women. Out of the more than 100 films he has produced thus far, CAMERA JAPAN screens a selection of four films focused around a common theme – the prominent place given to the Japanese Red Army and/or their sympathizers.
Due to his own affiliation with some of them he is still not allowed entrance to several countries including the United States.

New-wave political anarchistic film about a group of young radicals named after the days of the week, who are tightly organized into cells trying to start a revolution in Japan. Een jonge revolutionair ziet zich genoodzaakt Tokyo te ontvluchten met zijn schoonzus, nadat hij zijn bij de politie werkzame broer tijdens een verhitte discussie heeft neergeschoten. Samen vertrekken ze in noordelijke richting en verschuilen zich in afgelegen besneeuwde dorpjes op het platteland. Ze denken na over of ze zullen blijven vluchten of zichzelf zullen aangeven bij de politie. De prachtige winterlandschappen zouden goede reclame kunnen zijn voor de noordelijke Japanse regio Tohoku, indien de vreemde figuren die het stel onderweg tegen komt er niet waren.

A young revolutionary hastily flees Tokyo with his sister-in-law after accidentally shooting his brother, a cop, during a heated argument. Together they head north and hide out in snowy outskirts while debating running or turning themselves in. The beautifully shot winter landscapes would turn this movie into a promotion for the northern Japanese region of Tohoku, were it not for the strange characters they meet along the way.

Rondrennend door de donkere en nauwe steegjes van Tokyo, ontdekt hij dat de mysterieuze bendeleider bijgenaamd Shinjuku Mad verantwoordelijk is voor de dood van zijn zoon. Dit zou deel zijn van hun rebellie tegen de Japanse samenleving. Met op de achtergrond een fantastische jazzsoundtrack.

A father tracks down the murderers of his son to find out the reasons of his brutal killing and to seek revenge. Running around in the sleazy alleyways of Tokyo, he discovers that the mysterious gang leader, Shinjuku Mad, is responsible for his son's death which the gang claims to be part of their rebellion against Japanese society. Bizarre WAKAMATSU film, with a great Jazz soundtrack as background.

'United Red Army' is een op uitgebreid onderzoek gebaseerde reconstructie van het meest schokkende incident binnen militant links in Japan. In een afgelegen berghut in de sneeuw in 1972, lynchden Japanse revolutionaire studenten elkaar tijdens zogenaamde “zelfkritieksessies”. Dit mondde uit in een 10 dagen durend gevecht met de politie. Uitsluitend uitgaande van ooggetuigeverslagen slaagt WAKAMATSU er in om het langzame verbrokkelen van de onderlinge eenheid van een kleine groep fanatici die uiteindelijk uitmondt in een vicieuze cirkel van geweld en kromme rechtvaardigheid, te documenteren. Enkele leden van deze factie werden lid van het Japanse Rode Leger dat beruchte kapingen en aanslagen pleegde, inclusief de aanval op de Franse ambassade in Den Haag in 1974. Met een soundtrack door Jim O'ROURKE.

Based on extensive research, 'United Red Army' is a reconstruction of the most shocking incident of the militant left in Japan. In 1972, in a distant retreat in snowy mountains, Japanese revolutionary students lynched each other during 'self-criticism' sessions, which ended with the last few of them battling with the police in a 10 day stand-off. Solely relying on eye-witness reports, WAKAMATSU manages to recapture the slow deterioration of the unity of a small group of fanatics into a vicious circle of violence and bent righteousness. Members of this faction went on to join the Japanese Red Army which committed various notorious hijacks and assaults including one on the French consulate in The Hague in 1974. With a soundtrack by Jim O'ROURKE.
