Genius Party Beyond [Movie still]

The success of 'Genius Party' has had us intently waiting on which directors will feature on this much anticipated follow up. 'Genius Party Beyond' certainly does not disappoint. Previous work from this ménage of directors includes Quentin Taratino's 'Kill Bill Vol. I' en 'Akira'. 'Genius Party Beyond' is a cavalcade of Japanese anime. Japan's most popular directors were given free reign to create this collection of short animations. The creation of life, pent-up frustration, loneliness and dreams are some of the concepts addressed in this colorful array of anime. Expect fantasy, trigger happy space pirates and killer toys amongst others.

In 1995, this modern classic, about an elite police unit investigating cybercrime and crimes by robots, was acclaimed worldwide but Japanese attendance rates were disappointing. See how Major Kusanagi Motoko and her colleagues try to catch the Puppet Master who is manipulating people to do the dirty work for him, making him virtually untouchable. For the 2.0 version of this masterpiece, the latest digital film and animation technnologies were used, the soundtrack remixed and even the dialogue was updated to be in synch with modern day colloquial speech.

Time of Eve

Sun 27.09 / 20:00 / Lantaren-Venster / Rotterdam

Time of Eve [Movie still]

Influenced by the ‘Robot Ethics Committee’, androids have come into common usage. Taking the androids for granted, humans treat them as if they were household appliances. Others empathize with androids due to their human-like appearance. Known as ‘android-holics’ such people have become a social issue. But the problem becomes serious when some of the androids actually want to become human. Conversations make frequent allusion to Asimov’s ‘Three Laws of Robotics’, often highlighting surprising interpretations of those laws, some of which form apparent loopholes. A mesmerizing anime that uses 2D characters against fantastic 3D backgrounds.
