Retrospective: Pink Films from 60’s To 90’s

Het retrospectief van dit jaar staat in het teken van de pink film. We hebben er vier, allemaal totaal verschillend, gemaakt door verschillende regisseurs die ieder in een andere tijd werkten. Pink films zijn soft-erotische films, altijd gemaakt onder druk van krappe budgetten en tijdschema’s. De enige eis aan het genre is dat er naakt en seks te zien is. Verder hebben de regisseurs alle creatieve vrijheid. Dit heeft veel regisseurs de mogelijkheid gegeven zich met pink films artistiek te ontwikkelen en later in andere genres bekend te worden.

This year our retro has four pink films made in different decades of the past century by four different directors. The stylistic differences between the works vary widely, but all have in common is that they belong to the genre of pink film. These are soft erotic films made with very tight budgets and severe time constraints. But as long as there are a token amount of nudity and sex scenes, the genre offers directors a lot of creative freedom. Quite a few directors who later moved on to other genres gained their first experiences by working within this format.

Hoe zou OZU Yasujiro’s klassieker Tokyo Story (1953) er uit zien als het veertig jaar later was gemaakt en gebonden zou zijn aan de beperkingen van het pink film genre? Het antwoord hierop is SUO Masayuki’s (Sumo Do, Sumo Don't (CJ2006), Shall we Dance) enige uitstapje in de pink film, dat OZU’s meesterwerk parodieert, inclusief camerawerk en dialoog. In het naoorlogse Japan ziet een weduwnaar in Tokyo zijn familie langzaam uit elkaar groeien wanneer elk van zijn drie volwassen kinderen besluit het nest te verlaten en hun eigen geluk na te jagen.

What would OZU Yasujiro's classic work Tokyo Story (1953) look like if it was made forty years later and was bound by the restrictions of the pink film genre? The answer is SUO Masayuki’s (Sumo Do, Sumo Don't (CJ2006), Shall We Dance) only excursion into pink film, which parodies OZU's masterpiece, including cinematography and dialogue. Set in post-war Japan, a widower in Tokyo sees his family slowly falling apart when each of his three adult children decide to leave the nest to pursue their own happiness.

Despite All That [Movie still]

De relatie tussen Yoshio en Naoko heeft betere tijden gekend. Naoko heeft een vreemde neiging om zichzelf te snijden en Yoshio vindt dat hun liefdesleven wel wat opgepept mag worden. Op een dag klopt een van Naoko’s studentes bij haar aan en dringt zich aan haar op, en probeert het stel verder uit elkaar te drijven. Kan Yoshio met hulp van zijn vrouwelijke alter ego Naoko weer helemaal de zijne maken? Een komisch drama van de hand van een van de 'zeven goden' van hedendaagse pink film.

Yoshio and Naoko's relationship has seen better times. Naoko has a strange urge to cut herself, and Yoshio feels that their sex life needs to be spiced up. One day one of Naoko's female students forces herself unto her teacher and tries to drive a wedge between the struggling couple. Can Yoshio, with help of his female alter-ego, drive Naoko back into his arms? A comic drama by one of the 'seven gods' of contemporary pink film.

Hisao, zijn vrouw en model Saku, en de zwendelaar Torikin trekken van de ene heetwaterbron naar de andere, en verdienen de kost met het verkopen van naaktfoto's, het opvoeren van live-seks shows, en het vertonen van zelfgemaakte erotische films. De laatste zijn persiflages op stille films, en zijn gemaakt door Hisao die zijn vrouw hierin de hoofdrol laat spelen. Een vroeg werk van een van de belangrijkste pink film regisseurs van de eerste golf, die honderden films maakte in zijn ruim veertig jaar lange carrière.

Hisao, his wife and model Saku, and their hustling buddy Torikin travel between hot springs across the country trying to earn their keep by selling nude photos, performing live-sex shows, and showing their self-made erotic films. These last take their inspiration from silent films, and are made by Hisao who has his wife performing the lead role. An early work by one of the main pink film directors of the first wave, whose career spans over forty years during which he made hundreds of movies.

In de kleine ruimtes van de vele Japanse flats, brengen huisvrouwen het grootste gedeelte van hun leven door, zorgend voor het huis, wachtend op de vader des huizes. We volgen het leven van één van deze huisvrouwen en van de jongeman Makoto, die beiden tot waanzin worden gedreven door het gevoel opgesloten te zijn binnen de muren van het Japanse huis en de Japanse cultuur. Makoto moet hard studeren voor toelating op de universiteit, maar kijkt liever naar zijn buurvrouw aan de overkant, die, gefrustreerd door haar marginale bestaan, haar bed met vele mannen deelt.

In the small rooms of the many apartment buildings, most Japanese housewives spend their lives waiting for the man of the house to come home. We follow the lives of one such housewife, and that of the young man makoto. Both feel driven to the edge of insanity by the sense of isolation instilled by living within the confines of the small house, and of Japanese culture in general. Makoto has to spend all his time studying in order to be admitted to a university, but prefers to observe the woman living across the street, whom, frustrated by her marginal existence, shares the bed with many men.
