Retrospective: Nippon Noir
Film Noir refereert meestal naar misdaadfilms die in de jaren 1940 en 50 in Hollywood werden gemaakt. De kenmerkende thematiek, archetypes, cinematografie en taalgebruik onderscheidde deze films destijds van ander werk uit die tijd. Het genre is uiteindelijk een van de invloedrijkste genres voor filmmakers geworden. Deze selectie laat zien dat dit van oorsprong Amerikaanse genre enkele van Japans grootste regisseurs onder haar bewonderaars mocht rekenen, die de stijlconventies op verrassende en creatieve manieren in een Japans kader plaatsten.
Film Noir usually refers to crime films made in Hollywood in the 1940s and 50s. Their recognisable thematics, archetypes, cinematography and diction clearly set them apart from other films made at the time. Initially looked down upon, this genre became one of the most influential genres for filmmakers. This selection shows that this originally American genre had also admirers among some of the greatest Japanese directors, who adapted the style's conventions to Japanese settings in surprising and creative ways.

One of the leading directors of the Japanese nouvelle vague movement paints a bleak picture of post-war Japan where outcasts, rival youth gangs and prostitutes all try to eke out a living in the slums of Osaka. In this dog eat dog world, showing signs of weakness may only lead to one's owns demise.

Een eigenaar van een Chinees restaurant, een weduwe, een gangster, een apotheker en een leraar op een middelbare school jagen allen koortsig naar een geheime opslagplaats van morfine dat verstopt is in een voormalige schuilkelder, dat nu dienst doet als kelder van een slagerij. An owner of a Chinese restaurant, a widow, a gangster, a pharmacist, and a high school teacher are all hunting for a secret cache of morphine hidden in a former air-raid shelter, which is now the basement of a butcher shop. Though they all share a common goal, not everyone intends to share fairly with the others. An early work full of intrigue and suspense by one of the masters of Japanese cinema.

De meest recente film van ons retrospectief is ook de luchtigste, maar niet helemaal zonder controverse. Het parodieert terrorisme wanneer een natuurkundeleraar op een middelbare school op een dag besluit om zijn eigen atoombom te maken en dit gebruikt om zijn eisen aan de politie kracht bij te zetten. Zijn grote doel is de noodzakelijke veranderingen in de Japanse entertainmentindustrie. Met de herkenbare kapsels, muziek en enkele psychedelische scenes, is dit duidelijk een product van de jaren zeventig, hetgeen de film alleen maar ten goede komt.
The most recent film of our retrospective is also the most light-hearted one, and one not entirely without controversy. It satirises terrorism when a high school chemistry teacher decides to build his own atomic bomb and uses it to make demands to the Tokyo metropolitan police force to make changes in Japan's leisure industry. With its recognisable haircuts, music and some psychedelic scenes thrown in the mix, it is clearly a product of the seventies which only adds further to its charm.

Prachtig gefilmd in zwart en wit portretteert deze film twee rechercheurs die een huisvrouw nauwlettend in de gaten houden, hopend dat zij hen zal leiden naar hun moordverdachte. Naarmate ze dag in dag uit vanuit hun schuilpost op haar loeren en zien hoe zij mishandeld wordt door haar familieleden, krijgen ze steeds meer sympathie voor haar en betreuren ze de rol van vrouwen in de Japanse samenleving in het algemeen.
Beautifully shot in black and white, and set during an oppressively hot summer on the southern island of Kyushu, the story depicts two detectives who are keeping a tight watch on a housewife, hoping that she might lead them to their murder suspect. The longer they watch her getting on with her day to day life, and watching her endure maltreatment from her family members, the more they feel for her and lament the role of women in Japanese society.
