CAMERA JAPAN 2011
Het afgelopen jaar is een veelbewogen jaar voor CAMERA JAPAN geweest, allereerst zijn er grote bezuinigingen op cultuur waarvan we nog niet weten welk effect dat op het festival zal hebben. Maar het grote en schokkende nieuws voor ons was de ramp die de noordelijke regio Tohoku heeft getroffen en waarvan de gevolgen voor velen nog steeds dagelijkse realiteit zijn. Hoewel we met het festival juist de interessante en positieve aspecten van de Japanse cultuur willen benadrukken, komt de ramp terug in de film & debat avond in De Unie, en in de tentoonstelling After the Quake waarin bezoekers zelf invulling kunnen geven aan hun gevoelens over de gebeurtenissen in Tohoku.
Het thema dit jaar is ’Made in Japan?’. Hierin zoeken we de grenzen op van ’het Japanse’, met Japanse films met sterke westerse invloeden, documentaires gefilmd in Japan door westerse regisseurs, verrassende combinaties van mensen op het podium en andere grensoverschrijdende onderdelen.
De zesde editie van CAMERA JAPAN belooft weer een feest te worden voor de zintuigen met veel muziek, nog meer film en vele boeiende performances en activiteiten, zowel voor degenen die het festival dit jaar voor het eerst bezoeken als voor degenen die ons al eerder wisten te vinden.

CAMERA JAPAN 2011
2011 will be an unforgettable year for CAMERA JAPAN, unfortunately for many sad reasons. There were the big budget cuts in the Dutch cultural sector, of which we do not yet know how this will affect future editions of our festival. But the biggest shock came in March, when the northern Japanese region of Tohoku was struck by one of the greatest catastrophes the country ever had to face. The consequences of the severe earthquake, followed by a devastating tsunami and an on-going nuclear threat are still felt by many until today. Although CAMERA JAPAN aims to look ahead we do not want to divert our attention and forget what has happened. We will deal with the disaster at our film & debate evening in De Unie, as well as in the ’After the Quake’ installation, where visitors can express their feelings and emotions about the recent events in Tohoku.
The general theme of this year’s festival is ’Made in Japan?’, where the question will be raised of what can still be called ‘Japanese’ and what cannot. Expect Japanese films with influences from abroad, documentaries by foreign directors shot in Japan, surprising combinations of artists on stage and other program parts that will put the borders of Japan and the western world to the test.
The sixth edition of CAMERA JAPAN promises to be a feast for all senses, filled with even more film than usual, plenty of live-music and many other surprising performances and activities, both for our regular audience and for first time visitors.
